Michael Savin

I run the technical side of busy Shopify Plus stores.

Checkout, subscriptions, tracking and the automation between them, for DTC brands selling across the UK, EU and US. Fourteen years in e-commerce.

Technical lead at Reformed. Open to freelance and contract work.

What I take care of

I'm the person who owns the platform end to end, so your commercial team can run promotions, tests and launches without worrying what breaks underneath.

Shopify Plus builds and migrations

New stores, theme rebuilds, and moves from Magento or WordPress with no downtime and no lost search traffic.

Checkout and Shopify Functions

Checkout extensions, delivery and address validation, discount and gift rules.

Subscriptions

Skio setup and flows, upgrades and upsells, and the scripted fixes that keep pricing right.

Server-side tracking

GA4 and Meta Conversions API through Stape on your own subdomain, with consent built in.

Automation and custom apps

Cloudflare Workers and apps that connect Shopify to fulfilment and take manual work off your team.

International expansion

Markets, separate regional stores, geo routing, hreflang and basket handover between stores.

Also: I still build and look after Magento and WordPress sites, from Community to Enterprise.

Selected work

Two long engagements, both with brands that grew a lot while I looked after their stores.

Reformed

The stack I own

From storefront to doorstep

  1. StorefrontsShopify Plus ×2

A UK store for the UK, Ireland and EU, and a US store for North America, with geo routing and basket handover between them.

  2. CheckoutShopify FunctionsCheckout extensions

Address validation, delivery rules and gift logic that run on every order.

  3. SubscriptionsSkio

Plans, upgrades and scripted repricing for a store where nearly every order is a subscription.

  4. AutomationCloudflare WorkersCustom apps

Orders are checked, tagged and rewritten automatically before they reach the warehouse.

  5. FulfilmentShipBob

Receives clean, correct orders, with nobody fixing them by hand.

Scale and markets

  • Joined when the store sold to the UK only. It now sells to the UK, Ireland and the EU in local currencies.
  • Wrote the US migration runbook, covering the theme, 57 metafield and 4 metaobject definitions, about 13 apps, checkout, Flows and pricing. The US store went live in early October 2026, about three months later, on its own legal entity and Plus account.
  • Built geo routing for the US, Canada and Mexico, with hreflang and store switchers on both sites. A checkout extension hands North American shoppers to the US store with their basket intact.

Conversion and order value

  • Built the code behind the CRO team's Intelligems tests: quarterly bundle tiles, mix-flavour packs, plan rows, a free-pouch offer and the homepage video hero.
  • Ran a cookie banner A/B/C test on about 300,000 visitors. The winning version got 9.1% more people accepting tracking (95% confidence interval: +7% to +11%).
  • Automated the monthly-to-quarterly subscription upgrade. It handles about 120 upgrades a week, 700+ since launch, each rewritten for ShipBob with no manual work.
  • Found that around 1% of subscribers were paying 20% more than the better-value plan. Repriced them and added a cart nudge on both stores.

Subscriptions and tracking

  • Rebuilt the first-order gift Flows so only new subscribers get the kit. Repriced all EU shipping subscriptions in one scripted run and fixed under-pricing on US subscriptions.
  • Moved GA4 server-side through Stape on a first-party subdomain, with Meta Conversions API and consent-gated loading through Shopify's Customer Privacy API. That recovered 45% more page views that ad blockers and tracking prevention were hiding.

Automation

  • Built a set of Cloudflare Workers and custom apps: ShipBob order tagging, upgrade order rewrites with holds and auto-fixes, creator gifting sent straight to ShipBob so $0 orders stay out of the conversion rate, a one-click free-shipping action for CX, and a checkout rule against gift abuse.
  • Built Changeboard, one change log for the whole team covering admin, Flows, ShipBob, Skio and the theme, with AI tagging and Slack alerts. I built it after a hidden ShipBob rule quietly undid six months of fulfilment work.
  • Support 20–30 people across CX, ops, CRO, lifecycle and affiliates, and work directly with Skio, Stape, Superfiliate, AfterSell, Intelligems and Replo.

Plenish

Freelance Developer

2016 to 2022

  • 12×revenue and orders while I was there
  • 2 → 50people at the company
  • +35%order volume after moving to Magento
  • +25%sales in the first year on Shopify

Platform

  • Moved the brand off a WordPress site onto a full Magento build, then upgraded from Community to Enterprise as it grew.
  • Integrated the ERP for live stock across channels, and set up Klaviyo, reviews and affiliates.
  • Built the B2B platform and the technical side of the Ocado and Waitrose retail channels.

Shopify migration

  • Ran a six-month Magento to Shopify migration with no downtime and no SEO loss. Conversion went up and running costs came down.

“[Michael] is a great and trustworthy developer, skilled in Magento and IT. Highly recommend!”

Recent log

What a technical lead's year actually looks like: launches, migrations, and fixing things fast when they break.

  1. Geo routing liveUS, Canada and Mexico visitors routed to the US store, with hreflang, store switchers and basket handover at checkout.
  2. US store launched LaunchSeparate legal entity and Plus account, about three months from runbook to first regular orders.
  3. Subscription upgrade automation shippedMonthly subscribers moved to quarterly plans, with every order rewritten for ShipBob automatically.
  4. Checkout rollback IncidentA delivery customisation stranded subscription checkouts. Rolled back and shipped a safer version the same day.
  5. US migration runbookTheme, 57 metafield and 4 metaobject definitions, about 13 apps, checkout, Flows and pricing, all mapped before a line was moved.
  6. Plan picker outage fixed IncidentA third-party CDN pushed a breaking library update. Fixed the same evening, then self-hosted the library and pinned versions so it can't happen again.
  7. Horizon theme migrationThree optimisation phases: deleted a 27,000-line legacy stylesheet, inlined critical CSS, added responsive images and a service worker.
